Hill Country SUN

December 2008

It’s the holidays in the Hill Country, a chance to enjoy the cooler weather and the welcome opportunity the season provides to spend time with family and friends.

It’s normal to review the past year as it comes to a close — that’s what New Years resolutions are made of. As usual, I find there are a lot of things I need to do, but even more for which to be thankful.

This year, my son, Sam, has embraced the musician he was born to be. He began playing in earnest last March, when he received his first guitar on his 11th birthday. In nine short months, he has blossomed into a real player.

Some days, while driving home after school, we’ll hear a song on the car radio we like, and Sam will ask me its title. It’s not uncommon for him to be playing that very song (thanks to the internet and his natural talent) a mere 15 minutes after we arrive home.

To me, it’s amazing, and truly a gift for which to be thankful. My most rewarding experiences are watching Sam learn and grow.

This October and November, Sam performed at the Young Artist Performance Incubator (YAPI), hosted by musician Brenda Freed the first Thursday of every month at Maui Wowi in Wimberley. The program is designed to give young performers a venue and experience before a live audience. YAPI is a great chance for musicians ages eight to 19 to hone their skills, and Brenda deserves a lot of credit for the time she invests in the kids. You can find out more about YAPI on Brenda’s web site at www.brendafreed.com/yapi.

Here’s to happy holidays with your friends and family, and a wonderful New Year.
